Position Overview

Upwardly Global is seeking an experienced non-profit communications leader with expertise in public relations and editorial strategy, along with strong writing skills. You will develop our brand voice and messaging framework tailored to different audiences. And, you will craft compelling stories and key messages to support fundraising, brand communications, narrative change and media outreach.

This role requires a hands-on approach, with the ability to write everything from long-form blog content to engaging calls-to-action. You will lead and mentor an in-house writing team while collaborating closely with the Director of Digital Marketing to drive audience engagement and action.


Key Responsibilities:

a) Strategy:
  • Oversee our external editorial strategy to ensure we have compelling and engaging communications products in support of our program, fundraising and policy goals.
  • Develop and maintain our content strategy to ensure brand consistency across social media, email marketing and website content in close partnership with the Director of Digital Marketing.
  • Lead our PR strategy and crisis communications with the support of an external PR firm.
  • Lead our thought leadership strategy and support spokespeople in public engagements.
  • Drive a creative, multichannel approach to storytelling, including writing scripts for videos.

b) Writing:
  • Co-lead the development and use of audience personas.
  • Write, edit and commission reports, blog posts, social content, speeches and marketing materials.
  • Craft compelling stories and key messages that resonate with donors, partners, jobseekers and policymakers.
c) Leadership & Management
  • Oversee the story development process and the implementation of a story bank.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure organizational goals are met through strategic communications.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of three staff and external consultants.
  • Track and analyze channel metrics with the Director of Digital Marketing to measure effectiveness and improve strategies.

Skills & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in communications, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • A passion for our mission and changing the perception of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers in the U.S. and furthering immigrant workforce inclusion.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills for different audiences.
  • Proven experience with media relations and crisis communications.
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple stakeholders and priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience in mentoring a team of communicators and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong proficiency in digital marketing, social media management, and content creation.

Salary Range Disclaimer
The base salary range represents the low and high end of the Indeed salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Upwardly Global's total compensation package for employees. Benefits include paid time off policy, hybrid or remote work schedule, medical/dental/vision insurance, short-term disability insurance, life insurance and retirement plan with employer match.

Salary Range:
  • Central Region: $125,000 - $145,000 USD per year
  • Western/Eastern Region: $135,000 - $155,000 USD per year
